About Nagarmotha (Musta) Powder
Nagarmotha, known in classical Ayurveda as Musta or Mustaka, is the dried rhizome of Cyperus rotundus, a hardy sedge that grows across India's riverbanks and fields. Despite being treated as a stubborn weed by farmers, its small, dark, aromatic tubers are among the most respected digestive and metabolic herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. Musta is the headline ingredient in celebrated formulations such as Mustakarishta and features in countless Deepana-Pachana (appetizing and digestive) preparations.
In Ayurvedic terms, Nagarmotha carries a bitter, pungent and astringent taste (Tikta-Katu-Kashaya rasa), is light and dry in quality (Laghu, Ruksha guna), cold in potency (Sheeta virya) and pungent after digestion (Katu vipaka). This profile makes it a natural pacifier of aggravated Kapha and Pitta doshas. It is classically valued as a Grahi (absorbent) herb that helps firm up loose stools, a Deepana-Pachana that kindles digestive fire without overheating, and a Jwaraghna and Trishnanigrahana herb traditionally used to support the body during fevers and excessive thirst.
Beyond the gut, Musta is a traditional Ama-pachana (metabolic toxin-clearing) herb, which is why it appears in blends aimed at sluggish metabolism, water retention and a heavy, congested feeling. Its cooling yet drying nature also makes it a familiar name in preparations for oily skin, and in gynecological and lactation formulas where it is used to cleanse and regulate. The rhizome's warm, earthy, slightly camphoraceous aroma has additionally made it prized in traditional perfumery and herbal skincare.
At Vaidya Village we source clean, well-dried, aromatic Nagarmotha rhizomes, sorted and lab-checked for purity, so you can brew a traditional decoction or grind a fresh churna with confidence. As with all potent single herbs, it is best used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician as part of a considered regimen.

It can also be stirred into herbal teas or warm milk. Start at the lower dose to assess suitability. Traditionally used to support healthy digestion and metabolism; not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any condition. Consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition.
Precautions & Safety
Nagarmotha is generally well tolerated as a culinary-strength digestive herb, but a few honest cautions apply. Its cold and dry (Sheeta, Ruksha) nature can aggravate Vata and may cause dryness if overused, so those with a strongly Vata constitution should pair it with a suitable anupana (like warm water or a little ghee) and avoid excess. Avoid self-medicating during pregnancy: Musta is traditionally regarded as an emmenagogue and some animal studies suggest anti-implantation/antifertility potential, so use in pregnancy or while trying to conceive only under professional supervision. Nursing mothers and children should use only on advice, as it can influence lactation and digestion. People on diabetes, diuretic or other prescription medication should consult their doctor, as effects may overlap. Discontinue if you notice excessive dryness, constipation or any allergic reaction. This product is a traditional herbal ingredient, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Keep out of reach of children and store away from moisture.
