About Amarvel (Amarbel) Powder

Amarvel - better known across North India as Amarbel or Akashbel - is one of Ayurveda's most striking herbs: a leafless, rootless parasitic climber whose wiry, golden-orange stems drape over host shrubs like tangled threads of gold. Botanically it is Cuscuta reflexa (family Convolvulaceae), and the whole plant is gathered, dried and used both internally and externally. Its Sanskrit names Amaravalli and Akashavalli ("the creeper of the sky") reflect the way it seems to grow without touching the earth.

In classical and folk Ayurveda, Amarvel carries a bitter, pungent and astringent taste (tikta-katu-kashaya rasa), a light and dry quality (laghu-ruksha guna), a warming potency (ushna virya) and a pungent post-digestive effect (katu vipaka). This profile makes it primarily Kapha and Vata pacifying, and it is classically valued as a deepana-pachana (metabolism-kindling) and yakrit-uttejaka (liver-stimulating) herb. Generations of vaidyas have reached for its decoction as a traditional support for the liver and for jaundice-type conditions, and as a gentle internal cleanser that helps the body clear ama (metabolic residue).

Beyond the liver, Amarvel enjoys a long reputation as a blood purifier and a topical remedy. Its paste and oil-infusion are a classic folk hair tonic - massaged into the scalp and bald patches to traditionally encourage hair growth and reduce dandruff - while externally it is applied to itchy skin, rashes, minor wounds and aching joints. It is also known as a mild, natural laxative and diuretic. In Unani practice its dried plant serves as the Indian substitute for Aftimoon.

At Vaidya Village we source Amarvel that is carefully harvested from safe, non-toxic host plants, then cleaned, dried and checked for purity - because with a parasitic herb, the honesty of the source is everything. The result is a clean, aromatic, cut-and-sifted whole plant ready for decoctions, powders and oil infusions.

  • Time-honoured scalp tonic - applied as oil or paste to traditionally support hair growth and reduce hair fall on thinning patches
  • Bitter-astringent action traditionally used to soothe itching, rashes and minor skin eruptions when applied externally
  • Acts as a gentle natural laxative, traditionally used to relieve occasional constipation and ease bowel movement
  • Kapha-Vata balancing with a warming (ushna) potency that traditionally helps kindle sluggish digestion and clear ama

  • Used externally to help cleanse and support the recovery of slow-healing wounds
  • Mild diuretic action traditionally used to support urinary comfort and healthy fluid balance

Traditional Uses

  • Decoction (kwath) of the dried plant taken as a traditional liver, bile and jaundice-support tonic under guidance
  • Oil infusion or fresh-plant paste massaged into the scalp for hair growth, hair fall and dandruff
  • Powder or decoction used as a gentle laxative for occasional constipation

  • Used in Unani medicine as the Indian substitute for Aftimoon to balance excess phlegm and heaviness

How to Use

Internal use: Mix ¼-½ tsp (about 1-3 g) of the powder into warm water or with a little honey, once or twice daily, preferably after meals. Begin at the lower dose and take with plenty of water.

Topical (scalp & skin) use: Blend 1-2 tsp of the powder with warm water or a suitable carrier oil into a smooth paste. Apply to the scalp or affected skin, leave for 20-30 minutes, then rinse. Do a small patch test first.

Traditionally used to support natural detoxification, healthy blood, and scalp/hair care. Not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease. As Amarvel is a potent herb, please use it in moderation and consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use - especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing any health condition.

Precautions & Safety

Amarvel is a parasitic plant that grows on a host - quality and sourcing are critical, because material harvested from poisonous hosts (such as Datura, Nerium/kaner, Calotropis/aak or thevetia) can carry toxic alkaloids. Only use plant collected from safe, edible/non-toxic hosts. Internal use should be short-term and physician-guided; large doses can act as a strong purgative and cause abdominal cramping or loose stools. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and do not give to young children without professional supervision. Jaundice, hepatitis and other liver disorders require proper medical evaluation - use Amarvel only as a supportive adjunct, never as a replacement for medical treatment. Discontinue if you experience nausea, cramping or discomfort. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Keep out of reach of children and store away from moisture.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Amarvel the same as Amarbel or Akashbel?
Yes. Amarvel, Amarbel, Akashbel and Aakash Bel are regional names for the same herb, Cuscuta reflexa - the leafless golden dodder climber. Sanskrit texts call it Amaravalli or Akashavalli.
Can Amarvel be used for jaundice and liver health?
Amarvel has a long traditional reputation as a liver-supportive and jaundice remedy, and is still used this way in folk Ayurveda. However, jaundice needs proper medical evaluation - use Amarvel only as a supportive adjunct under a qualified physician, not as a standalone treatment.
Does Amarvel really help with hair growth?
It is a classic folk hair tonic. The plant is boiled into an oil or made into a paste and massaged into the scalp and thinning patches to traditionally support hair growth and control dandruff. Benefits are traditional/anecdotal and best used externally with consistency.
Is Amarvel safe to consume?
External use is generally well tolerated. Internal use should be short-term, low-dose and physician-guided, since large amounts act as a strong purgative. Crucially, only use plant sourced from safe, non-toxic host plants - this is why sourcing matters so much.
Why does the host plant matter for Amarvel?
Amarvel is parasitic and draws sap from whatever plant it grows on. If harvested from a poisonous host it can carry toxic compounds. Our Amarvel is verified from non-toxic hosts and lab-checked for purity.
How should I store Amarvel and how long does it last?
Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place away from moisture. Stored this way it stays good for about 24 months.
