About Aritha (Reetha / Soapnut) Powder

Aritha, better known across India as Reetha and to the wider world as soapnut, is the dried fruit of Sapindus mukorossi, a large deciduous tree native to the Himalayan foothills and northern plains. The leathery amber-brown fruit shell is naturally packed with saponins - plant compounds that foam gently in water - which is why generations of Indian households have soaked and boiled Reetha to wash hair, delicate fabrics and jewellery long before commercial shampoos existed. In Ayurveda it is classically named Arishtak and grouped among the kaphaghna (Kapha-reducing) dravyas.

According to Ayurvedic pharmacology, Reetha carries a predominantly Katu (pungent), Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) rasa, Ushna virya (heating potency) and Katu vipaka. Through these qualities it is traditionally understood to pacify Kapha and clear channels, which is why it appears in formulations aimed at cleansing, degreasing an oily scalp and lifting away impurities. Its mild lekhana (scraping) and vishaghna (traditionally detoxifying) actions gave it a place in classical texts for external washes and, under expert supervision, in specific therapeutic preparations.

For modern users, Reetha's biggest appeal is as a sulphate-free, biodegradable cleanser. A simple soak or decoction of the fruit shells yields a soft, low-lather wash that cleans hair and scalp without stripping natural oils, making it a favourite in natural hair-care routines alongside Shikakai and Amla. The same saponin-rich water is prized for cleansing delicate skin, washing woollens and silks, and even reviving the shine of gold ornaments.

At Vaidya Village, we source whole, sun-dried, deseeded-or-whole soapnut pods, cleaned and free from added detergents or fillers - so you get the authentic, time-tested ingredient exactly as it has been used for centuries.

How to Use

Primarily for external use as a natural cleanser. Hair wash: mix about 1-2 tsp (3-6 g) of the powder with warm water into a thin, lathering paste (or steep in warm water for a few minutes), massage into wet scalp and hair, then rinse thoroughly; use 1-2 times a week. Face or body pack: blend around ½ tsp (1-3 g) with water, rose water or a little honey into a smooth paste, apply to skin, leave for 8-10 minutes and wash off gently. Keep well away from the eyes as the natural saponins can sting. Do a small patch test before first use, and consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician or dermatologist before regular use if you have sensitive skin, an existing scalp/skin condition, or are pregnant. Traditionally used to support cleansing and hair-and-skin care; not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition.

Precautions & Safety

Reetha saponins are strongly irritant to the eyes and mucous membranes - avoid contact with the eyes and rinse immediately with plenty of water if it enters. Taken internally in more than trace amounts it can act as an irritant and emetic, causing nausea, vomiting and stomach upset, so it should never be self-administered internally; unpurified fruit is considered mildly toxic and traditionally requires shodhana (purification) before any therapeutic internal use. Do not use internally during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Its heating (Ushna) nature and astringency may aggravate Pitta and can leave hair or skin dry with overuse - space out washes and follow with conditioning oils if needed. Do a small patch test before first skin use to rule out sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children and pets. This product is a traditional cosmetic/herbal ingredient and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Aritha (Reetha) used for?
Reetha, or soapnut, is most commonly used as a natural, sulphate-free cleanser. Its saponin-rich fruit shells are soaked or boiled to make a gentle shampoo for hair and scalp, a mild wash for delicate skin, and an eco-friendly cleaner for silk, wool and jewellery.
How do I make shampoo from Reetha?
Soak 4-6 soapnut shells in about 400-500 ml water overnight, simmer for 10-15 minutes, cool, mash and strain. Use the foamy liquid as a shampoo, massaging into wet hair and rinsing well. Many people blend it with Shikakai and Amla for a complete herbal hair wash.
Is Reetha safe to eat or take internally?
Reetha is primarily an external-use herb. Its saponins are irritant and can cause nausea or vomiting if ingested in more than trace amounts, and unpurified fruit is considered mildly toxic. Internal use should only ever be done under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
Will Reetha make my hair dry?
Because it is a natural cleanser with a heating, astringent nature, overuse can leave some hair types feeling dry. Using it together with Amla, avoiding daily washing, and following with a light oil or conditioner usually keeps hair soft and balanced.
What is the difference between Reetha and Shikakai?
Both are natural cleansers often used together. Reetha (soapnut) provides the foaming, deep-cleansing saponins, while Shikakai is milder and more conditioning and helps maintain shine. Combined, they cleanse effectively while keeping hair manageable.
Is Reetha the same as Sapindus trifoliatus?
They are closely related soapnut species. Sapindus mukorossi is the larger North Indian/Himalayan soapnut supplied here, while Sapindus trifoliatus is the smaller South Indian variety (Kunkudukaya). Both are saponin-rich and used similarly for cleansing.
