About Karanj Beej (Pongamia Seed) Powder

Karanj Beej is the dried seed of Pongamia pinnata (botanical synonym Millettia pinnata), known in classical Ayurveda as Naktamala and popularly as the Indian Beech or Pongam oil tree. This hardy, nitrogen-fixing tree grows abundantly across the Indian subcontinent, and its flat, kidney-shaped seeds have been prized for generations as the source of Karanja oil (Karanja taila) - a thick, bitter oil that forms the backbone of many traditional skin and wound formulations.

In Ayurvedic terms, Karanja carries Katu (pungent), Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) rasa, Ushna virya (heating potency) and Katu vipaka, with Laghu, Ruksha and Tikshna qualities. It is classically described as Kapha-Vata shamaka (pacifying) and is grouped among the Kushtha-ghna (skin-disorder relieving) and Krimighna (anti-parasitic) dravyas. Traditional texts also credit it with rakta-shodhaka (blood-purifying) and vrana-shodhana-ropana (wound-cleansing and healing) action, which is why it appears so widely in lepa (paste) and taila (oil) preparations.

Traditionally, Karanj Beej and its oil are used almost entirely externally - massaged into the scalp for dandruff, applied to itchy or eruptive skin, and used to dress slow-healing wounds and ulcers. Because the raw seed is potent and considered toxic if swallowed, any internal use in Ayurveda follows a strict shodhana (purification) procedure and expert supervision. The same bioactive strength makes Karanja oil a well-known traditional biopesticide and insect repellent.

At Vaidya Village we source clean, mature, naturally sun-dried Karanj seeds from Pongamia trees, hand-sorted and free from mould and debris, so you receive an authentic raw material suited to traditional oil-pressing, external paste preparation and physician-guided formulation.

How to Use

For external use. Take ¼-½ tsp (about 1-3 g) of the powder and blend with a little warm water, rosewater, or coconut oil to form a smooth paste. Apply a thin layer to the affected area of skin or scalp, leave on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water; use 2-3 times a week or as directed. Do a small patch test first, as the seed is potent and can irritate sensitive skin. Karanj seed powder is traditionally reserved for topical application and should not be taken internally except under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Keep away from eyes and out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, on medication, or have a known skin condition, please consult a qualified physician before use.

Precautions & Safety

Karanj seeds are naturally bitter and rich in potent bioactive compounds; the unpurified seed is considered toxic if ingested and may cause nausea, vomiting or stomach upset. Do not consume raw or unpurified seeds. Any internal use must follow proper classical shodhana and expert supervision. Internal use is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Being ushna (heating) in potency, it may aggravate Pitta and sensitive skin - always patch test the oil first and discontinue if irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children and pets. This product is a traditional raw herb, not a substitute for medical treatment; consult a physician for any persistent or serious skin or health condition.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Karanj Beej safe to eat?
No - raw or unpurified Karanj seeds are considered toxic if swallowed and can cause nausea or vomiting. Karanj Beej is used almost entirely externally (as oil or paste). Any internal use in Ayurveda requires classical purification (shodhana) and must be done only under a qualified Vaidya's supervision.
What is Karanja oil made from these seeds used for?
Cold-pressed Karanja oil (Karanja taila) is a traditional external remedy applied to the skin and scalp - used to soothe itching, support skin affected by scabies or ringworm, dress wounds, and manage dandruff. The same oil is also a well-known natural insect repellent and biopesticide.
Is Karanj the same as Latakaranja or fever nut?
No. 'Karanj Beej' here refers to Naktamala (Pongamia pinnata). Latakaranja / Kantakikaranja (Caesalpinia bonduc, the fever nut) is a different, spiny climber traditionally used for fever and worms. Always confirm the botanical name - this product is genuine Pongamia pinnata seed.
Can I use Karanj Beej for dandruff and hair care?
Yes. The seed's oil is traditionally massaged into the scalp to help manage dandruff, flakiness and itching and to support healthier hair. Do a patch test first, and avoid if your scalp is very Pitta-sensitive, as the oil is heating in nature.
Does it help with skin problems like eczema or scabies?
In traditional Ayurveda, Karanja is classed among the Kushtha-ghna (skin-disorder relieving) herbs and is applied externally to support skin affected by itching, eczema-like eruptions, scabies and ringworm. It supports skin health rather than curing disease - please consult a physician for persistent conditions.
How should I store the seeds?
Keep Karanj Beej in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Stored well, the raw seeds stay good for about 24 months.
