About Ashwagandha Root Powder
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is arguably the most celebrated adaptogenic root in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Its Sanskrit name literally means "the smell of a horse" (ashwa = horse, gandha = smell), a nod both to the characteristic aroma of the fresh root and to the traditional belief that it imparts the vigour and vitality of a stallion. Classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenative), Balya (strength-giving) and Vajikarana (reproductive tonic) herb in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita, it has been used for millennia to nourish the body, steady the mind and restore depleted reserves.
In terms of Ayurvedic energetics, Ashwagandha carries a predominantly Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) rasa with a Madhura (sweet) vipaka, Ushna (heating) virya and Laghu-Snigdha (light, unctuous) qualities. This profile makes it primarily Vata- and Kapha-pacifying, which is why it is so valued for grounding an over-active, anxious or exhausted Vata constitution while gently building strength (bala) and healthy tissue (dhatu). Its warming nature also makes it a classic winter and convalescence tonic.
Modern interest centres on its withanolides - steroidal lactones concentrated in the root - which underpin its reputation as an adaptogen that helps the body maintain balance during physical and mental stress. It is commonly taken to support healthy energy, muscular strength and endurance, calm restful sleep, and reproductive wellness in both men and women. As a nightly milk decoction (ksheerpaka) it is a time-honoured way to promote deep, refreshing sleep and steady daytime energy.
At Vaidya Village our Ashwagandha is sourced as clean, sun-dried root, milled fresh to a fine churna so that its natural aroma and withanolide-rich potency are preserved. It is best thought of as a daily tonic to be taken consistently over weeks, rather than a quick fix - the classical rasayana benefits build gradually with regular use under appropriate guidance.

How to Use
Take ¼-½ tsp (about 1-3 g) of the fine powder once or twice daily. Stir it into a cup of warm milk or warm water, or blend into a smoothie; you may add a little honey or ghee to taste. Traditionally taken at night with warm milk to support restful sleep, or in the morning for daytime vitality. Begin with the lower amount and adjust gradually. Not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition, please consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use.
Precautions & Safety
Avoid during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed by a qualified physician, as it is traditionally considered heating and potentially uterine-stimulating; use with professional guidance while breastfeeding. Because it may increase thyroid hormone levels, use caution or seek advice if you have hyperthyroidism or take thyroid medication. As an immunomodulator it may not suit active autoimmune conditions (e.g. lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis) without supervision. Its Ushna (heating) potency means high-Pitta individuals or those with acidity, heat conditions or bleeding disorders should use it moderately, ideally balanced with cooling anupanas like milk or ghee. May add to the effect of sedatives, thyroid, blood-pressure and blood-sugar medications - consult your doctor and discontinue before scheduled surgery. It belongs to the nightshade (Solanaceae) family, so avoid if you have a known nightshade sensitivity. The root requires no special shodhana (purification) and is well tolerated, but keep out of reach of young children and use only under advice for them.
This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.
