About Chirayata Seed Powder
Chirayata (Swertia chirayita), known in classical Ayurveda as Kiratatikta - literally "the bitter herb of the Kirata hill people" - is one of the most revered bitter tonics of the Himalayan materia medica. Growing wild across the temperate Himalayas at altitudes of roughly 1,200 to 3,000 metres, it has been prized for centuries as a household remedy for sluggish digestion, seasonal fevers, and impure blood. This Chirayata Beej offering carries the same signature bitter principles - amarogentin, swertiamarin and chiratin - that give the plant its legendary tikta potency.
In Ayurvedic terms, Chirayata is tikta (bitter) with a secondary kashaya (astringent) note in rasa, laghu (light) and ruksha (dry) in guna, sheeta (cooling) in virya, and katu (pungent) in vipaka. This profile makes it a classic Pitta and Kapha pacifier. It is traditionally described as deepana-pachana (kindles digestive fire and aids metabolism), jwaraghna (used in fevers), raktashodhaka (a blood purifier), krimighna, tvachya (supportive of clear skin) and hepato-supportive - a true "bitter of bitters" used to cool internal heat and clear ama (metabolic residue).
In everyday practice, Chirayata is most often taken as a cold overnight infusion (hima), a simmered decoction (kwath), or a fine powder mixed with honey or warm water. Because its bitterness is so pronounced, it is classically used in small doses before meals as an appetite-kindling digestive bitter, and features in many seasonal-detox and skin-care herbal blends, particularly through the Kapha-Pitta and monsoon seasons.
Our Chirayata Beej is sourced from the Himalayan growing belt, naturally sun-dried and cleaned, and checked for purity and correct identity - an important safeguard given that Chirayata is sometimes adulterated with related Swertia species. It is offered as a traditional wellness ingredient to support your daily and seasonal routines, not as a substitute for medical care.

How to Use
Mix ¼-½ tsp (roughly 1-3 g) of the powder into a glass of warm water, or blend it with a little honey to soften its strong bitterness. Take once or twice daily, ideally on an empty stomach before meals. It can also be stirred into herbal teas or smoothies. Begin with the lower amount to let your palate adjust, as Chirayata is naturally very bitter. Traditionally used to support natural detoxification and blood purification; not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition. Pregnant or nursing women, children, and anyone with a medical condition or on medication should consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use.
Precautions & Safety
Chirayata is intensely bitter and drying (ruksha) - begin with a low dose. Avoid during pregnancy, as strongly bitter herbs are traditionally avoided; use caution while breastfeeding. It may lower blood sugar, so anyone on antidiabetic medication should monitor levels closely and consult a doctor to avoid hypoglycaemia. It may also lower blood pressure - use caution if you tend toward hypotension. Excessive doses can cause nausea, vomiting, loose stools, or loss of appetite. It is not recommended for prolonged uninterrupted use; cyclical courses are preferable, and it should be used cautiously in cases of significant dryness, dehydration, emaciation or debility. Chirayata is not classed among the toxic (visha) herbs and does not require formal shodhana (purification), but correct identity and clean sourcing are essential, as it is sometimes adulterated with related Swertia species or confused with Kalmegh (Andrographis). Keep out of reach of children. This is a traditional wellness product and not a substitute for professional medical diagnosis or treatment.
This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.
