About Baheda (Bibhitaki) Powder

Baheda, known in Sanskrit as Bibhitaki, is the dried fruit of Terminalia bellirica - a tall deciduous tree native to the forests of India and Southeast Asia. Its Sanskrit name is often read as "the one that keeps away the fear of disease," a nod to the high regard it has held in Ayurveda for thousands of years. Along with Haritaki and Amalaki (Amla), Baheda is one of the three fruits that make up Triphala, arguably the most trusted formulation in the entire Ayurvedic tradition.

In classical texts, Bibhitaki carries a predominantly astringent (kashaya) taste with a hint of sweetness, light (laghu) and dry (ruksha) qualities, a heating potency (ushna virya) and a sweet post-digestive effect (madhura vipaka). This profile makes it especially valued for balancing Kapha and Pitta, clearing excess mucus and supporting the throat, chest and digestive tract. It is classically celebrated as a "kasahara" (cough-relieving) and "swarya" (voice-supporting) herb, which is why the fruit pulp has long been chewed or simmered into a warm decoction during coughs, colds and hoarseness.

Beyond the respiratory tract, Baheda is a well-known Rasayana - a rejuvenative herb traditionally used to support healthy ageing, steady digestion and comfortable, regular elimination. It is rich in natural tannins, gallic and ellagic acids and other polyphenols that contribute antioxidant activity. The same astringent, cleansing character has made Bibhitaki a favourite in hair and scalp care, where the fruit decoction and powder are used to strengthen roots, condition the scalp and support natural hair colour.

At Vaidya Village we source clean, naturally harvested Baheda fruit, carefully deseeded so you work only with the beneficial pericarp. Use it on its own as a decoction or powder, or blend it with Haritaki and Amla to prepare your own fresh Triphala at home. As with all potent Ayurvedic herbs, it is best used mindfully and, for therapeutic purposes, under the guidance of a qualified practitioner.

How to Use

Mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (about 1-3 g) of Baheda powder into warm water, and stir in a little honey to taste. Traditionally taken once or twice daily, ideally after meals, or as directed. It can also be blended into warm milk or a smoothie. Begin with a smaller amount and adjust as it suits you. Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Not intended for pregnant or nursing women without guidance. As with any herbal supplement, please consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or physician before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition.

Precautions & Safety

Use only the fruit pulp/pericarp - the inner seed (kernel) is traditionally considered intoxicating/narcotic and should be removed and discarded. Baheda is heating (ushna) and drying (ruksha), so excess may aggravate Vata and cause dryness or discomfort in sensitive individuals; keep well hydrated. It can have a mild laxative effect at higher doses. Avoid during pregnancy and lactation unless supervised by a qualified practitioner. Its astringent tannins may reduce the absorption of some medicines and minerals - separate intake from medication by about two hours and consult your physician if you take regular medicines (including blood-sugar or thyroid medication). This product is a traditional herbal ingredient and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease; it is not a substitute for professional medical care.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Consult a qualified physician before use, especially during pregnancy, lactation or with existing conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Baheda the same as Bibhitaki?
Yes. Baheda (also spelled Bahera or Bahedu) is the common Hindi market name, while Bibhitaki (or Vibhitaki) is the Sanskrit name. Both refer to the fruit of the same tree, Terminalia bellirica.
How is Baheda different from Haritaki and Amla?
All three are the fruits that make up Triphala, but they are different plants. Baheda is Terminalia bellirica, Haritaki is Terminalia chebula, and Amla (Amalaki) is Emblica officinalis. Baheda is especially valued for the throat, cough and Kapha balance, while the trio together support digestion, detox and rejuvenation.
Can I use Baheda for cough and a sore throat?
Baheda is a classic Ayurvedic herb for the throat. A warm decoction of the fruit, or slowly chewing a small piece of the deseeded pulp, is traditionally used to soothe an irritated throat, ease dry cough and support a clear voice. It pairs well with Mulethi (licorice) and honey.
Is the Baheda seed safe to use?
No - you should use only the outer fruit pulp (pericarp). The inner seed or kernel is traditionally regarded as intoxicating and is removed before use. Our Baheda is supplied deseeded so you work only with the beneficial part.
Can I make Triphala at home with Baheda?
Yes. Combine equal parts of Baheda (Bibhitaki), Haritaki and Amla powders to make fresh Triphala churna. A common dose is around half to one teaspoon with warm water at night, but consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for guidance suited to you.
Does Baheda help with hair?
Baheda is popular in traditional hair care. Its astringent, tannin-rich decoction is used as a scalp rinse or infused into hair oils and masks to help strengthen roots, condition the scalp and support natural hair colour, often alongside Amla and Bhringraj.
